Residency: Week 4
First, how is it already week 4 (?!)
I was hoping I would not become sick during my entire residency but tis the season, and taking the subway provides exposure to all the lovely germs.
Out of respect to other artists in the studio, and respecting my Self by listening to my body, I ended up having shorter days and taking 1.5 days off to rest earlier this week. Lots of echinacea elderberry tea, honey lemon ginger tea, and oil of oregano was had. A studio friend kindly suggested herbal supplements and I am so grateful.
Taking this time allowed for accomplishing non-studio tasks - like figuring out how to free up space on my maxed out phone to be able to record more videos at future classes/workshops, further planning now that I’ve worked with new-to-me clay.
Although I would have preferred to be practising in the studio, taking this time was necessary to enable replenishing energy to sustainably kick ass long term.
Mid/end week, I was able to get back into the studio, masked up. I finished throwing English porcelain testers for a special collab with M.A. And connected with talented Niklas Dorsch to continue our exciting collab.
This week I worked with Standard Clay - 240 White Clay. I threw some small pieces (moon jars, tea cups, etc) to be used as glaze testers, and threw a smaller composite also for glaze testing purposes. I also attempted a larger composite but learned that how I prepared the sections and my end vision didn't align. So I ended up trying to force her to become something she didn't want to be. I ended up slicing this and will try again tomorrow. 240 White Clay is nice to throw and carve.
Dave Kim’s Korean moon jar class (2/4): we threw 6lb moon jars! Next class, we will be working with 12lbs.
Tiffany Saw’s class (2/7): we threw 3lb moon jars! I'm excited to carve it next class. She is helping me demystify how to spiral wedge (it's taken 3 talented teachers to help me so far 😅🙈). She is such an incredible artist, ceramicist, and teacher. I'm very grateful to be able to learn from her, and so appreciative of her patience to help me figure out spiral wedging in a way that works for my brain 🥲🙏🏼💛
